My dear readers, pull up a seat, and let me regale you with the tale of my husband’s 40th birthday celebration in the hidden gem that is Dominica, the nature island. This lush paradise often gets compared to Hawaii, but with a fraction of the tourists. And let me tell you, it’s a well-kept secret that you’ll want to visit before the masses descend.

I wish I knew not plan so much.
What we enjoyed the most about Dominica were the people. The locals are delightful and take pride in their island’s beauty. They’re also extremely knowledgeable and excited to share their expertise. Although I had so much planned for our trip, we ended up swapping some of them for recomendations from locals. One of those swaps landed us in Titou Gorge, and it was one of the best decisions ever!
Now, I must confess, my husband and I have never been the most adventurous souls. However, Dominica’s call to explore was too alluring to pass up when recommended. Our first adventure was to swim through Titou Gorge, which ended at a breathtaking waterfall. I can still feel the mist on my face and the adrenaline pumping through my veins.
Our tired muscles demanded a break, so we next made our way to the natural hot springs. As a lover of all things spa-like, I can attest that this experience was heavenly. The warm waters bubbled around us, and we felt completely rejuvenated.
I wish I knew that the best way to best way to explore the island, is outside of it.
I made so many plans to explore the different cities on the island, that I almost missed out on a bout tour. Now I know that no visit to Dominica would be complete without taking a boat ride around the island to explore. And if you want to see where the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet, but you don’t like to hike, then you definitely want to schedule a boat tour on your trip. The views were awe-inspiring, with the deep blue waters stretching out as far as the eye could see. Our boat captain shared interesting facts and stories about the island and its history.
I wish I knew how delicious Keeping’ It Real Restaurant is.
Our boat ride ended at the most popular restaurant on the island, Keepin’ it Real. The food was, well, real. Freshly caught seafood, deliciously seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was an experience that our taste buds won’t soon forget. If I could do it over, I would have gone there for dinner almost every single night.
As we reminisce about our trip to Dominica, we can’t help but feel grateful for the memories we created. If you’re looking for a beautifully undiscovered paradise, put Dominica on your list.

I wish I knew how easy it is to get dual citizenship in Dominica as a U.S. Citizen.
Dual citizenship offers a wealth of opportunities, from enhanced travel options to investment benefits. If you’re a U.S. citizen who has obtained citizenship in Dominica, it’s essential to understand how to maintain this status effectively. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Understand Dual Citizenship Laws
Both the United States and Dominica allow dual citizenship. However, the U.S. does not formally recognize dual citizenship but allows it under certain circumstances. In Dominica, holding a second citizenship is legal, and there is no requirement to renounce your U.S. citizenship. Ensure you are familiar with the requirements and limitations of both countries.
2. Comply with U.S. Tax Obligations
As a U.S. citizen, you are required to file taxes with the IRS, regardless of where you live or your dual citizenship status. Make sure you:
- File an annual income tax return (Form 1040).
- Report any foreign accounts through the Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR).
- Understand the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) and Foreign Tax Credit, which can help reduce tax burdens.
Non-compliance with U.S. tax regulations can lead to penalties, so staying updated with IRS requirements is crucial.
3. Maintain Your U.S. Passport
Maintaining your U.S. citizenship means you need a valid U.S. passport for international travel. When traveling to and from the United States, you must use your U.S. passport. When entering Dominica, you can use your Dominican passport for ease of access.
Tip: Renew your U.S. passport every 10 years to avoid issues during international travel.
4. Keep Your Dominican Citizenship Active
Dominica offers citizenship through investment and birthright, with minimal ongoing requirements. To maintain your Dominican citizenship:
- Stay compliant with the investment program if you gained citizenship through investment.
- Ensure your passport is valid (Dominican passports are valid for 10 years).
- Consider spending time in Dominica, as regular visits may help you stay connected and fulfill any residency obligations.
5. Understand Legal and Residency Requirements
While there is no residency requirement to maintain your citizenship in Dominica, engaging in the local community and business environment can be beneficial. Be aware of any legal obligations, including:
- Property ownership rules if you own real estate in Dominica.
- Business regulations if you operate a company or have investments in the country.
6. Stay Informed About Changes in Law
Citizenship laws can change, so it’s essential to stay informed about any legislative updates in both Dominica and the United States. Regularly consult with immigration experts or legal advisors specializing in dual citizenship matters.
Conclusion
Maintaining dual citizenship in Dominica as a U.S. citizen is straightforward but requires attention to legal and tax obligations. By staying compliant with both countries’ regulations and keeping your documents up to date, you can enjoy the full benefits of dual citizenship, including greater mobility and investment opportunities.
