Blood Orange and raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries Fruit Pie with child and adult holding a honey stick

I literally came up with this recipe in a pinch. It was my Mother in-laws birthday and she decided that she wanted to stop by our house for a quick visit on the way to her birthday trip. The ingredients quickly came to mind because I wanted to have something special for her when she arrived.

I had a couple of blood oranges left from making my Blood Orange Kombucha Mojitos  a few days prior. And I had just bought a ton of berries for the kids that morning. So, I grabbed a pack of pie crust from the ‘fridge, along with the other ingredients and got to work.

Prepping your Fruit

When it comes to the berries, all you have to do is give them a good rinse. However, when it comes to your oranges, you want to cut them in a specific way. This will ensure that you’re able to get the “wheel” look for each slice, that will stay together without the rind.

I know you’re probably asking, why don’t I just peel it the regular way and then slice. Well, of course I tried. It was an epic fail because the orange slices did not hold its shape that well when I started to slice. I find the method below produced the best result.

How to Cut the Orange

  • Cut the top of the orange
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the rind off of the orange. Be sure to keep the white flesh (albedo) in tact as much as possible.
  • You can then carefully slice your orange.
